Rickard Lundin and Hans Lidgren, two Swedish scientists, claim they may have found the source of excess energy in LENR, describing their theory in a paper called Nuclear Spallation and Neutron Capture Induced by Ponderomotive Wave Forcing (full length paper here) which will be presented on Friday, October 16, at the 11th International Workshop on Anomalies in 
Hydrogen Loaded Metals, hosted by Airbus in Toulouse, France.
Their theory described ponderomotive forces at resonance frequencies excite neutrons from elements such as deuterium and lithium, and that these neutrons are then captured by a metallic matrix, resulting in a net energy release.

We demonstrate that nuclear energy may be derived from a two-stage process: 1) thermal neutron spallation induced by resonant Ponderomotive wave forcing, and 2) isotopic transmutations by thermal neutron capture of heavier elements. While the former (spallation) consumes energy, the latter (neutron capture) produces energy, the combined process leading to a net energy output.
